Seasonal Walking Tour Guide

Are you a history and culture enthusiast with a knack for entertaining and educating others? Join our team at St. John’s Walking Tours, where we provide fun and informative walking tours of the city that focus on the history, people, arts, food, and culture of the region. Our goal is to delight visitors while educating them, and we love a quirky St. John’s story. We’re currently seeking a seasonal tour guide to lead group tours twice daily, and this could be the perfect opportunity for students and seasonal workers looking for an exciting summer job.

Flexible Start/End Dates: mid-May until mid-September

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the owner/chief tour guide to research, plan, and lead group walking tours in downtown St. John’s
  • Update the owner daily on each day’s tours
  • Lead a group of visitors through a twice daily 3km tour route, telling pre-determined stories, facts, and mentioning points of interest at each stop
  • Coordinate group and confirm bookings prior to the start of each tour
  • May be required to deal with small amounts of cash from walk-up guests
  • Must be reliable and punctual
  • Keep guests together, safe, and entertained throughout each tour
  • Deal with any minor client service issues that may arise on tours
  • Work with marketing to create social media content and learn how to run social ads
  • Will need to coordinate timing for stops at 3rd party vendors
  • Be able to provide recommendations to guests for restaurants, shops, or other local sites
  • Encourage guests to leave reviews on 3rd party websites

Qualifications:

  • Passion for history, culture, and entertaining others
  • We encourage authenticity and want our guide to let their personality shine
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to engage with a diverse group of guests
  • Must be a personable and clear communicator, able to hold the attention of a group
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with the owner/chief tour guide
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Good spatial awareness to avoid impeding pedestrian or vehicle traffic
  • Theatre or teaching experience is a bonus but not necessary
  • Must be authorized to work in Canada
